added charcoal runners/baffles to the firebox

Postby gooose53 » Mon May 21, 2012 7:55 am

Ok, not sure exactly what you call them but, took three pieces of steel the same height as the firebox in the Competitor and made a snake for the charcoal. Have used this about 6 times now with good success. Started firebox around 9pm; put meat on at about 10:15pm, cooker was at about 150 degrees. Kept the temp at 235 all night. Pulled the butts at about 8:30am and put on the ribs on at 7am. Got over 12 hours without even thinking about loading more charcoal. This method does take longer to get the cooker to temp but worth it in my opinion.

Anyone else try this and your thought and experience?

Can we see a picture please?

And were you cooking dry or with water?

Thanks for sharing your experiment.

I used the water pan. I just did a quick paint pic for you.

Can I ask please - you formed the snake fuse with two single steel plates and no air gap - I'm surprised the fire didn't heat the steel and propagate the fire straight across instead of maintaining a fuse burn. Are you sure the fire didn't burn across just like a basket full of coals would? Not doubting, just quite surprised.

Thanks

It acted as it should. Not sure what you mean by air gap. The steel plates sit on expanded metal.

I did the same thing with my party firebox and it follows the snake pattern and doesn't cross over unless you over fill the thing.

I works just fine. One of the best things I've done with the smoker besides the heat diverter.

I did almost the same thing. went down to the local hardware store and picked up a box (sold in pkg of 6) of firebricks used to replace an old wood stove or fireplace. one brick sitting in the middle along one side of the firebox makes a horseshoe shape and enough distance never to cross over. I've used it several times on my party since purchase and it's worked out great for me.

its called a charcoal maze or fuse burn. http://tuckercooker.storesecured.com/it ... detail.htm tucker cookers sell them as an accessory. used this method for my old offset. got wise and got a bws, and use a third of the fuel. on another note, my stoker extended my cook times, get 10+ hours last week and had charcoal to spare, no reload
