Party or Chubby? looking to buy

Postby realtorguy » Sat Apr 07, 2012 2:32 pm

I have a brinkman water smoker now, and want to move up, and backwoods smokers look like a great option. Only cook at home, so is a chubby big enough? Never do over 5- slabs or 3 butts at the same time. If so, I am looking for a chubby or party. I live in memphis, tn.

Welcome to the forum. I live in Cordova. I have a Chubby and you can do 4 butts at a time if they are not much over 8 lb. ea.
I did 2 10 pounders last weekend and I don't think I could have gotten 4 in there. The 5 slabs is easy. Give me a call if you have any questions. 901-2705423. Another of our members on the forum lives in Germantown and he also has a Chubby.

That is awesome. I live in Cordova too. A great water smoker is hard to find. A friend of mine got the big green egg ceramic, and keeps burning things, and you cant cook much on that think. My family is growning (grandkids), so I might go a party. They talk about heat diverters and convection options. Are those that important if you are smoking with water or juice all the time?

The heat diverter yes, it will help keep the water in the pan form evaporating as fast.
If you can go party, go for it, buy the biggest smoker you can, you will have times you will fill it and more, and it will not use much more fuel then the smaller one.

I have a party with all the option. Stainless Steel doors, extra insulation, heat diverter, casters, extra racks, tie down handles, etc. I am asking $1800 for it, and paid $2700 less than a year ago. I cook 18 racks of ribs at a time and it is full. I would be careful not to go too small. I thought the party was going to be too large for my usage, but almost as soon as I got it, I was smoking meat for friends. If I fire it up, I can count on a dz friends to offer to throw meat on it for them. I am going to move to the next size up. I live in Knoxville, but will be travel through memphis regularly and will be there for memphis in May as well. Hal Denton 865-617-3712 captain.hal@jollymon.info

1+ what Captain said - always go with the next bigger model if you can swing it. You'll never regret having the extra space, but you will occasionally regret the lack of space.

I agree, bigger is always better. I bought the Chubby for the price, I picked up mine used for $600. It only had about 5 cooks in it when I got it. A Gator is my next BWS purchase. A Party is a good all around size and if you go with the extended it will probably do 95% of the things you want to cook. The regular Party will do at least 90% of what you want for less cash.
